Photography

Camera Simulator
If you're teaching camera theory and don't have a class set of DSLRs (who does?) this might be a useful reference.  It allows students to experiment and see the effects of changing the ISO, shutter speed and aperture in different lighting conditions.

1x
This website is home to some of the most spectacular photographs on the web.  They have very strict submission policies which means that every photograph is of a high quality.  A great source of inspiration and amazement.  Be advised, however, there are artist nudes so take care how you use it in class.

Flickr
This photo sharing website has a great culture of support and feedback. It can be a good way of getting students to look critically at photography.  Pull up some examples from a group and get the class as a whole to talk about what they liked, what they didn’t like and what could be improve.

DP Review
This website contains incredibly detailed camera and lens reviews.  It’s a great site to send your kids to if they ask you what camera to buy.  (I used to give my students a task where they had to buy the best camera and lenses they could for $1000.  They had to look for things like if it could take good photographs in poor light, have little noise, at least 12MP, etc.)

Design

Design Bloom
This website contains everything from packaging to architectural design, so it might not always be in the scope of this subject... but it's always interesting.

Design*Sponge
Another design blog, although with a focus on interiors, this one is a favourite for Julia Rothman's guest post on how to make a detailed repeating pattern: http://www.designsponge.com/2008/05/welcome-julia-and-how-to-make-a-repeat-pattern.html

Logo Trends 2011
An interesting - and sometimes critical - report on the popular approaches to logo design in 2011.  It always amuses me that something which is meant to be unique and stand out actually follows trends - the 2011 'O' trend  is particularly interesting.

Grain Edit
This website is really focused on the illustrative and typographic realms and always contains something of interest.

The Design Files
While sometimes overly focused on interiors and homewares, this blog is based in Melbourne and so can add some useful knowledge about what is actually going on in our local design community.

Design Principles and Elements.
Not exactly the same as terms listed in our training package units but some helpful examples.

Web Design

Smashing Magazine
More of a 'web design' than a 'graphic design' blog, it contains some interesting tidbits about the world of developing.  Very useful for updating your industry knowledge.  (For example, this article about how designers and developers can work together: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2011/05/13/two-cats-in-a-sack-designer-developer-discord/
They're also worth following on twitter.

You The Designer
Although not strictly speaking only a ‘Web Designer’ blog (it also contains packaging designs, logos, free fonts, etc), this contains some really useful web design ‘top ten’ lists.

CSS Zen Garden
Ever had a student ask:  “Why do we need CSS?”  CSS Zen Garden is a great way of demonstrating the benefits of using CSS for design.  Each example is based on the same raw page, with a different CSS style sheet ‘plugged’ in.  Some are better designed than others.

css fresh blend
This is a great site for interesting and unusual interface designs.
